This nineteenth-century neoclassical overmantel mirror is constructed from giltwood, glass, and gesso in a gold colourway. The grand Regency design displays a breakfront cresting with a central fluted frieze, floral cartouches, side scroll details, and carved laurel leaf swags hanging across the top glass edge. Further decoration includes drop husks and scrolling acanthus leaves in high relief at the sides, mounted on a shaped platform base. The antique mirror glass shows very minor foxing, and the frame has an antique gilt painted finish. Measuring 150 cm high, 148 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, this large rectangular piece is designed for placement above the mantel in a home. It suits both classical masculine interiors and feminine romantic schemes, functioning as a practical focal point for various decorative layouts.

Designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, an overmantel mirror reflects light and expands room dimensions, featuring water-gilded wooden frames crafted in Neoclassical or Regency styles during the nineteenth century.

These mirrors typically combine carved wood, plaster or gesso moulding, and thin gold leaf layers applied using traditional water gilding techniques over red bole clay and silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural wear revealing underlying clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and gentle oxidisation or spotting on the mirror glass.

Position the mirror above a contemporary fireplace or console table to create a focal point, pairing classical carved detailing with clean-lined neutral walls and modern artwork.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding water, spray cleaners, or chemical products that dissolve gesso and strip original gold leaf.
