Trumeau French Mirror with Seascape Oil Painting of Galleons at Sea

19th century
For Sale by Sale Antiques
Description

SPECIAL NOTE :

NO INTERNATIONAL EXPORT AVAILABLE

A VERY REASONABLY PRICED EXAMPLE

WE BELIEVE THE GALLEONS MAKE IT VERY

DESIRABLE / A GOOD SIZED CANVAS

A desirable interior designers piece with sought after subject matter depicting French

Fleet of Galleons, very well painted with good detail.

An antique mirror, usually in a vertical rectangular frame, that features an oil painting, watercolor, or decorative carving at the top is called a trumeau mirror (often pronounced troo-moh).

A fine Oil on Canvas depicting a french fleet of galleons at sea.

The work is mounted as a gilt trumeau mirror. The whole has a wonderful look and would have originally been constructed to be mounted in a panelled interior.

Notice the original panelling which has been retained to re-enforce the back of the frame and behind the mirror section all as found.

The painting has a few patches verso, however you would never know as when seen from the front the surface looks fine and well restored restored

The lower mirror has been replaced in the past and the frame is all good with the usual wear to gilt.

Part of the original backing panel of wood is still in place behind the mirror,

but we are thinking about closing fully with a further piece of board to keep out any moisture.

Note there has been old woodworm in this back panel, but it’s all dead and long gone.

This item would look ok ideally placed above a Demi-lune side table with a nice carriage clock or a pair of Meissen figurines placed in front or the lower mirror to reflect.

Dateline : Estimated to be around 1850

A trumeau mirror is a traditional French wall mirror featuring a decorative painted panel or carved relief inset directly above the mirror glass within a single rectangular frame. Originating in 18th-century France, they were designed to sit on the pier wall between windows or above a fireplace mantel to enhance ambient light and architectural symmetry.

Traditional trumeau mirrors were constructed using timber framesoften pine or oakfinished with plaster composition ornament and gold leaf gilding. The upper section typically incorporates oil paint applied to canvas or wood panel, alongside mercurial glass plates in older period examples.

Authentic period trumeau mirrors display signs of hand-carved wood or composition moulding, hand-cut joinery on the rear frame, and natural oxidisation on the gilding and glass plate. The oil painting section should show legitimate age-related craquelure across the paint layer rather than printed textures.

A trumeau mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantel or placed over a hallway console table to anchor a rooms focal point. Its vertical proportions make it ideal for drawing the eye upward in spaces with tall ceilings, bridging classical architecture with contemporary furnishings.

Dust the gilded wood frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that degrade water gilding. The oil painting section requires dry dusting only, while the glass plate should be cleaned using a damp cloth applied carefully to avoid contact with the gilt frame.
