Charles II Oak Safe Box with Original Complex Steel Lock C. 1680

Description

A late 17th century oak safe box.

Made by hand in c. 1680 with raised hand carved geometric mouldings to front and top, lovely splayed plinth. Original timbers throughout, peg and dovetail jointed.

The top and bottom board with some shrinkage cracks which are stable and not going anywhere. Old dings and marks to the plinth. No key present.

The applied top mouldings of a particularly intricate form and with a steel escutcheon.

The box opens to reveal the original steel locking mechanism – similar to that of an Armada chest of this period but in a miniature form and all hand cast the fettled.

The box retains its original lidded til and was probably used by a wealthy merchant and would have been secured within a locked chamber in the house.

Dimensions are:

23.5 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and 11.5 inches high. When lid is raised, 24 inches high.

This Charles II oak safe box dates from the seventeenth century, constructed by hand with original timbers throughout using peg and dovetail joints.
