S and S Timms Antiques Ltd has dated this Georgian Gainsborough Library Armchair to the 18th Century.

Gainsborough chairs of this form were amongst the most comfortable and substantial armchairs produced during the Georgian period and this is a particularly attractive example, combining generous proportions with an elegant and relatively restrained design.
The shallow fluting to the square legs is another particularly nice detail, whilst the old brass roller castors remain in place below.

The chair is extremely comfortable and, despite its generous proportions and high back, remains elegant in appearance. It would work equally well as a traditional library or fireside chair, or as a statement armchair within a more contemporary interior.

As with all items which we offer for sale this chair has been attended to in our workshops, where it has received a natural wax polish and any necessary traditional restoration, before being offered for sale ready to place straight into the home.
