Late 19th / Early 20th Century Maple Framed Mirror

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome antique mirror with a beautifully mellow maple frame, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The broad moulded frame has a warm honey tone with lovely natural patination, softened edges and age-related wear throughout. Its simple architectural form gives it a particularly versatile look, working equally well in a traditional or more contemporary interior. The frame appears to be genuinely period, while the mirror plate and backing may be later replacements.

Condition: There is some historic wear and damage to the frame, including small losses and knocks, all shown in the photographs. We rather like the character as it is,

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, maple was frequently chosen for mirror frames due to its tight grain and light tone. These mirrors typically feature clean, moulded borders that highlight the natural pattern of the timber.

Frames from this period feature mitred corner joints secured with internal wooden keys or brads, placed over a softwood backing structure. The glass plate is fitted into a rebate carved directly behind the moulded profile.

Authentic examples display surface patination, subtle wood movement at the corner mitres, and original timber backing boards. The glass plate may exhibit light foxing or silvering breakdown consistent with period manufacturing methods.

Position the mirror above a contemporary console table or sideboard to contrast clean modern lines with historic wood grain. It can also be placed in a hallway to maximize ambient light and add natural warmth.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a neutral beeswax sparingly once a year. When cleaning the glass, apply cleaner directly to a cloth to prevent liquid from running into the wooden frame rebate.
