Dining Chairs – Set of 6 Gothic Revival by Norwich Maker

19th century
For Sale by Bed Bazaar
Description

Fine Antique Oak Upholstered Dining Chairs of East Anglian interest. A good set of eight late 19th-century oak upholstered dining chairs in the Gothic Revival style. Each with an arch pad, upholstered back with leaf-carved spandrels and faceted uprights. They further feature stuffed-over seats on chamfered legs.

The chairs were made in Norwich and feature metal trade labels for Trevor Page & Co. Furnishers, Norwich. Originally, the chairs were upholstered in Rexine/American cloth, and this was in place when we acquired them; one image shows them in the Rexine cloth, pre the restoration work we carried out. Secondly, the pictures of them in place in the Guild Hall, Norwich, also show them in the Rexine scheme.

IMPORTANT Provenance: The chairs previously resided in Norwich Guildhall. They are the actual chairs shown in the historic pictures of them in place in the Guild Hall, which we researched and found on the internet. The chair’s vendor also alerted us to this provenance

Complete as seen; please NOTE that the pictures form the greater part of the description, so please look at these closely. The chairs are in outstanding condition, having been extensively and professionally restored by a team that includes master cabinetmakers, THE BEST French polisher and a top-flight antiques upholstery specialist.

Current upholstery is white 100% cotton calico, double self-piped. The thinking being this would make a good basis to be reupholstered in COM (customer’s own material). They can also be permanently used in the white cotton calico finish. This approach has always pr

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gothic Revival dining chairs from the 19th century typically feature architectural elements adapted from medieval buildings, including pointed arches, tracery carving, blind arcading, and turned finials.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense British hardwoods, particularly oak and walnut, which held sharp details when carved. These frames were paired with leather, velvet, or woven wool upholstery.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carved detailing, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, crisp structural lines, and signs of genuine age such as natural timber shrinkage and surface patination.

The dramatic, tall silhouette of these chairs creates visual interest around contemporary dining tables. Re-upholstering in light, neutral fabrics provides a clean contrast against dark carved timber.

Dust intricate carvings using a soft-bristled brush, apply clear beeswax sparingly along the wood grain once or twice a year, and keep the chairs away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
