This set of eight Victorian Gothic Revival dining chairs dates from 1860 and is made from dark brown oak with woven cane seating. Each piece has a carved oak back featuring foliage and grape motifs, flanked by barley twist uprights with small finial posts at the top. The structure incorporates turned carved front legs, barley twist back legs, and barley twist stretchers uniting the frame. Every chair measures 107 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 50 cm deep. Such seating provides a traditional dining arrangement for a formal dining room or a country house kitchen. The open cane work and rich wooden tones bring period character and texture to an interior, while the sturdy upright design offers practical seating around a large dining table.

FAQs

Victorian Carolean Revival chairs draw inspiration from 17th-century Late Stuart and Jacobean designs, featuring high backrests, intricate wood carvings, woven cane seats, and distinctive barley twist turnings.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid timbers such as oak or walnut, combined with hand-woven rattan cane seats and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery for durability.

Authentic Victorian examples exhibit crisp hand-carved decorative motifs, natural patination along the timber finish, uniform wear across the stretchers, and traditional joinery methods.

Pairing carved oak chairs with a simple contemporary dining table creates a deliberate visual contrast that highlights historical detail while maintaining a balanced room composition.

Clean the oak timber using a soft cloth and apply natural beeswax polish periodically, while lightly misting the underside of the cane seats with water to retain elasticity.
