Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A girandole is a decorative mirrored wall light or sconce fitted with branches for candles or electric bulbs, designed to reflect light back into the room. Originating in 17th-century Europe, these fixtures became widely popular across Italy and France during the Baroque and Rococo periods for their dramatic carved frames and luminous qualities.

Traditional Florentine girandoles were hand-carved from timber, layered with a gesso primer, and finished using thin sheets of gold leaf. The backplate incorporates a central mirrored panel, with wrought metal or hand-carved timber arms extending out to support candles or light fittings.

Authentic antique giltwood pieces typically feature hand-carving irregularities, historical wear through the gilding revealing the red or grey bole beneath, and natural patination on the glass. Examining the back panel often reveals hand-cut timber boards and historic fixing methods rather than modern composite materials.

Position a pair of giltwood girandoles symmetrically on either side of a mantelpiece, a central mirror, or above a sideboard to frame a focal point. Their reflective surfaces and warm metallic finish add depth and texture to contemporary rooms, working effectively against dark painted backdrops or neutral plaster walls.

Giltwood finishes are sensitive to moisture; clean the carved surfaces using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove dust. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents on the gilded areas, and clean the glass panels carefully using a cotton swab without allowing liquid to touch the surrounding gesso.
