Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique writing slope is a portable wooden box featuring a hinged, angled interior designed to create an inclined writing surface when opened. Popular from the late eighteenth through the nineteenth century, these boxes held pens, inkwells, paper, and correspondence materials for travellers and writers.

Nineteenth-century writing slopes were typically constructed from durable hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut. Exterior corners and edges were frequently reinforced with brass binding, while interior surfaces featured velvet or skiver leather writing mats alongside brass or glass inkwell fittings.

Authentic Regency era writing slopes feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass edge protection, inlaid brass stringing, and period-correct lock mechanisms. The wood grain on genuine period pieces exhibits natural oxidisation and shrinkage lines around brass inlays consistent with age.

An antique writing slope serves as a functional decorative object on an executive office desk, console table, or bookshelf. Placing the box closed adds historical texture to contemporary study spaces or living room shelving displays.

Keep rosewood items away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and damp environments to prevent wood movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply high-grade beeswax polish annually to protect the original finish and brasswork.
