Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency tripartite overmantel mirror is a wide, horizontally orientated wall mirror designed during the early nineteenth century to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Characterised by its three-panel glass construction, this style typically features architectural framing, such as classical pilasters, cornice moulding, and decorative gilding.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods like pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso and finished with water or oil gilding. The inner frame or slips frequently incorporated ebonised wood or dark paint accents, while the reflective surfaces were created using mercury-amalgam silvered glass.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery on the rear pine backboards, subtle foxing or grey oxidisation spots on the original glass plate, and natural wear or cracking along the gesso surface where gilding has aged over time.

In modern living spaces, these mirrors are traditionally positioned above a chimneypiece or fixed over a large hallway console table. Their wide horizontal aspect helps bounce natural light across a room while serving as an architectural focal point.

Dust the giltwood frame gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids or commercial cleaners that dissolve gesso and gilding. Clean the glass panels using a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep into the inner wooden slip.
