Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency overmantel mirrors were designed during the early nineteenth century to sit directly above fireplace mantels. They are characterised by architectural proportions, Neoclassical moulding, low-relief plasterwork, and decorative elements such as ball friezes, columns, and classical urn or ribbon swags.

These mirrors were typically constructed from pine or lime wood frames coated in composition plaster or gesso. Decorative embellishments were finished using water gilding with gold leaf or distemper paint, while the mirror sections contained mercury-backed or early silvered glass plates.

Authentic pieces generally feature original timber backing boards, hand-divided triple plate glass, and signs of age such as minor oxidisation or foxing on the reflective surface. Moulded details often show subtle variations inherent to hand-applied gesso work.

A horizontal overmantel mirror can be mounted above a fireplace, sideboard, or console table to create a structural focal point. Its muted palette and gilded architectural details complement neutral wall surfaces and contrast with streamlined contemporary furnishings.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging delicate gilding or plaster relief. Avoid applying liquid cleaner directly to the frame, and clean the glass plates using a slightly damp microfibre cloth without letting moisture seep behind the frame edges.
