Pair of Early 20th-century Dinco Penny Chairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A characterful pair of early 20th-century Swedish Dinco penny chairs, constructed in ash and beech and retaining the classic penny chair form. Lightweight yet robust, these chairs are well regarded for their comfort and practical design. One chair shows more evidence of use, while the other appears to have seen very little wear, creating a visually interesting but still cohesive pair.

One chair retains remnants of the original Dinco label, adding a desirable point of authenticity.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A penny seat chair is a traditional style of country seating, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, defined by a rounded or shaped wooden seat paired with turned legs and vertical back spindles.

These chairs were predominantly crafted using native hardwoods such as beech, elm, and oak, featuring steam-bent crest rails, wedge-jointed spindles, and turned legs reinforced with stretchers.

Authenticity can be verified by examining hand-lathed turned legs, evidence of traditional joinery without modern screws, natural wear patterns on the seat edge, and maker stamps or stencils beneath the seat.

These chairs function well as accent seating in an entryway, alongside a modern kitchen table to create visual contrast, or paired in a reading corner topped with textured wool throws.

Maintenance involves dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
