We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier cabinet is a narrow, low display cabinet originally designed to sit against the wall pier between two windows. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces were used to display books, porcelain, and collected objects in formal reception rooms.

Victorian pier cabinets were typically constructed with solid timber frames faced with decorative wood veneers such as burr walnut, rosewood, or mahogany. They frequently feature cast brass or gilt-bronze mounts, glazed door panels, marquetry inlay, and fabric-lined interior shelving.

Authentic 19th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, original blown or drawn glass pane with subtle surface variations, and genuine floral or geometric marquetry inlays. Inspect the back for hand-sawn timber panels and check for natural age-related patination around brass fittings.

Position a pier cabinet in a hallway, alcove, or living room to add historical texture and character. Arrange the glass-fronted shelves with ceramics, art volumes, or sculptured items, and anchor the top surface with a table lamp or framed artwork hung directly above.

Keep the cabinet positioned away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes to prevent veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing in the direction of the grain.
