This pair of side chairs dates from the Louis XV period in 1900 and exemplifies classic French chateau style. The frames are constructed from beech and finished in a distressed off-white paint with pale blue and green floral crest carvings along the top and apron. Each chair features a cartouche back and elegant cabriole legs, paired with recently upholstered neutral off-white linen. Signs of age include the intentionally distressed paint finish on the wooden frames. Measuring 90 cm high, 48 cm wide and 52 cm deep, these seating pieces fit comfortably around a dining table or serve as decorative accent chairs in a living room, bedroom or hallway. They bring a touch of traditional French elegance to both classic and contemporary interiors while offering sturdy, sound seating for daily use.

FAQs

Louis XV seating is defined by its fluid Rococo lines, cartouche-shaped backs, sweeping cabriole legs, and hand-carved floral motifs. These chairs were designed for comfort and social interaction, frequently finished with paint, gesso, or gilding.

Craftsmen typically used hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or fruitwood for the carved frame. The timber was coated with gesso and layered paint before being fitted with traditional webbed seating, horsehair padding, and natural linen or velvet upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in hand-carved details, and genuine layered wear on painted surfaces where undercoats or bare timber show through. Inspecting the underside often reveals historical upholstery tacks and aged frame timber.

Pair painted chairs with a contemporary minimalist table or position them as accent seating in a bedroom or hallway. The contrast between ornate carved frames and crisp modern surroundings highlights the historical profile of the furniture.

Dust frames regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid water or harsh detergents that could strip historic paint or gesso layers. Keep upholstery clean using a low-suction vacuum attachment, and position the chairs away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
