Georgian Papier Mache Table Snuff Box

Description

A good example of a papier mache snuff box dating from the early 19th Century. It has a black lacquered finish with a whimsical hand painted portrait of a regency gentleman in period attire on the lid.

It is in good original condition with a lovely patina. There are some signs of age and use, some minor knocks and marks to the exterior and some crackling and crazing to the finish but overall it displays well. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

Diameter : 3 1/2" / 9cm

Height : 1 1/4" / 3cm

Popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries, these were compact containers designed to store powdered tobacco. Crafted from compressed paper pulp and finished with durable lacquer, they frequently featured hand-painted portraits, figures, or satirical scenes on the lid.

Craftsmen layered paper sheets glued together with paste, pressed them into moulds, and baked them to create a dense structure. The surfaces were subsequently coated in dark varnish or lampblack lacquer before being hand-painted and polished to a smooth finish.
