We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally designed to sit between large windows on the solid wall space known as a pier, a Victorian pier cabinet is a low, narrow display cabinet or bookcase. Typically featuring glazed doors, decorative wood veneers, and marquetry inlays, these cabinets were used in 19th-century homes for displaying books and collectibles.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from hardwood timbers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or ebonised wood. They frequently incorporate detailed marquetry or parquetry inlays, gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, clear glass door panels, and velvet or silk linings on internal shelves.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-cut dovetail construction, original glass panels displaying minor imperfections or wavy distortion, and hand-chased brass or bronze hardware. Examining the rear timber boards often reveals hand-sawn tool marks and natural wood shrinkage consistent with historical construction methods.

A Victorian pier cabinet serves as an accent piece in hallways, living rooms, or home offices without occupying excessive floor space. Displaying modern ceramics, framed artwork, or contemporary lighting on top creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern decor.

To preserve the timber finish, place the cabinet away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to protect the wood.
