Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian walnut pier cabinet is a display piece from the Victorian period, constructed from richly figured walnut veneer with a warm brown colour and a warm patina. The single glazed door is edged with beaded brass trim and flanked by decorative ormolu mounts on the side pilasters, while the cabinet stands upon a sturdy plinth base. Opening the door reveals fabric-lined shelves with walnut fronts, showing marks and fading on the fabric lining that are consistent with age and use, plus the original key. The cabinet measures 106 cm high, 77.5 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. Placed in a home today, it functions as a practical display cabinet for collectibles or tableware in a living room, hallway, or dining area, bringing an English Country House aesthetic to the interior.

FAQs

Originally designed to be positioned on the narrow wall space or pier between two tall windows, a pier cabinet is a low, narrow display cabinet popularised during the 19th century. In Victorian homes, these pieces were typically utilised to house porcelain, books, and decorative collectables.

These cabinets were frequently crafted using fine timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood over a pine or oak carcass. Decorative elements often included clear glazed doors, brass or bronze ormolu mounts, string inlay, and polished lacquer finishes.

Authentic 19th-century pier cabinets display period construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original glass with slight surface distortions, and patinated bronze or brass fittings. The back panels usually consist of wide timber boards showing natural age-related shrinkage.

A pier cabinet works well as a focal accent in an entryway, hallway, or dining area to display glassware or ceramics. Positioning a contemporary table lamp or framed artwork directly above creates a balanced contrast between historical furniture and modern decor.

Keep the cabinet situated away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber veneer from lifting or changing colour. Clean surfaces with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain.
