Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian ebonised furniture featuring mother-of-pearl inlay gained immense popularity in the mid-to-late 19th century, influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Orientalism. These pieces were crafted using dark-stained or lacquered timberand occasionally papier-macheadorned with delicate slices of iridescent shell (nacre) depicting floral motif patterns and highlighted with gilt paintwork.

Craftsmen meticulously carved shallow recesses into the timber base, inserting thin, shaped pieces of polished shell held by adhesive. Intricate gold leaf gilding was painted around the borders, while the seat frame was hand-drilled to weave split rattan cane into a durable, flexible mesh pattern.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit handmade variations in the shell inlay, natural wear to the gilding along high-touch edges, and hand-cut joinery underneath the seat frame. Original cane seats often show natural darkening or slight irregularity in the woven rattan split strands.

An ebonised decorative side chair functions as an accent piece in modern spaces, placed in a hallway corner, alongside a contemporary dressing table, or paired with minimalist bedroom furniture to create visual contrast.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or water that can loosen spirit lacquers and adhesives. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the cane from drying out or shrinking.
