Description

Pair of 19th Century Victorian Pitch Pine Glastonbury Armchairs

*Lovely Colour and Patina – England, circa 1880*

A striking pair of late 19th-century Victorian Glastonbury armchairs in pitch pine, dating from around 1880 and offered in excellent original condition.

These highly decorative Gothic revival armchairs display a wonderful aged patina, with the pitch pine showing a fine, lively grain and warm caramel tones. Each chair features a square panelled back, bold shaped arms with a graceful serpentine profile, and attractive trefoil-pierced fretwork that enhances their ecclesiastical character.

A Glastonbury chair is a design of X-frame wooden armchair inspired by a 16th-century original found at Glastonbury Abbey, which gained widespread popularity during the 19th-century Gothic Revival.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense timbers such as pitch pine or oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joinery secured with visible wooden pegs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural aging, genuine surface patination, heavy pitch pine timber with pronounced graining, and pegged frame construction.

Positioning an X-frame chair in a hallway or study introduces architectural structure and rich timber tones that complement both neutral minimalist schemes and classic decors.

Clean the timber using a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
