Description

A beautiful solid silver Indian box. It is unmarked but tests as high grade silver. I would date it to c1900 most likely made in the Kutch region. It has been beautifully hand made being embossed and chased with flowers. It is in superb condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs, it closes tightly and the inside is clean and gilded. It measures almost 2 inches (15cm) square by a touch under 1 inch tall and weighs 42 grams. A superbly designed beautiful example.

FAQs

Kutch silverwork originates from the Gujarat region of India, popularised during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is characterised by dense, intricate floral repousse and chasing techniques depicting native foliage.

These boxes were constructed using high-purity or sterling silver, shaped through hammering, repousse, and detailed chasing tools to form raised relief patterns.

Authentic pieces display tight floral and scroll repousse work, high visual depth, subtle wear to high points, and occasionally regional silversmith stamps.

A silver box functions effectively as a decorative accent on an office desk, dressing table, or sideboard top, adding metallic texture to surface arrangements.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and gently treat with a dedicated silver polishing cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleansers that remove intentional oxidised background shading.
