This set of twelve George III dining chairs dates from the late 18th century and is made of dark brown mahogany with an upholstered seat in a blue, yellow and off-white patterned fabric. Each chair features a pierced splat back with carved fan motifs, upright rectangular frames, stuffed-over seats, and panelled tapering front legs. The construction includes visible tied cushion cords hanging beneath the seats, rectangular upright rear legs, and openwork back frames that provide structural support. The dimensions of each chair are 94 cm high by 51 cm wide by 48 cm deep, giving a comfortable scale for a formal dining space. These chairs suit a traditional dining room or a grand living space around a large dining table, providing substantial seating for family meals or dinner parties. The classic George III silhouette and timber finish complement both period interiors and refined modern dining areas.

George III dining chairs, produced between 1760 and 1820, are defined by Neoclassical influences popularised by designers such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton. They frequently feature carved mahogany backs with vertical splats, rectangular or shield-shaped frames, and square tapered or turned legs.

Georgian cabinetmakers primarily utilised dense Cuban and West Indian mahogany, valued for its fine grain and structural durability. Construction relied on traditional hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, corner blocks beneath the seat frame for reinforcement, and hand-carved decorative splats.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, asymmetrical hand-planed timber surfaces underneath the seat frames, and genuine age-related wear around the stretchers and foot rails. The patination of original mahogany displays a depth and oxidisation that modern chemical stains cannot replicate.

Integrate a set of mahogany dining chairs alongside a minimalist contemporary dining table to create deliberate visual contrast. Reupholstering the seat pads in neutral linen or geometric modern fabrics helps bridge historical architecture with contemporary interior schemes.

Dust the mahogany frames regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the seating positioned away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, joints loosening, or fabric discolouration.
