This early 19th-century Victorian ladies needlework casket is formed from black lacquer papier-mâché, embellished with iridescent abalone shell pearl inlay and detailed gilded scrollwork. The sloped double-hinged lid incorporates two opening panels depicting architectural church scenes framed by foliage, complementing the central fixed black arch handle and the ornamental gilt scroll designs adorning the lower front surface. A plinth-style base supports the structure, which displays visible edge wear and fragmented shell detailing along the borders. Measuring 19 cm high, 29 cm wide and 26 cm deep, this lidded sewing box functions as a decorative accessory for a sideboard top or display surface within a living space or bedroom setting. Collectors of sewing items place items like this in traditional domestic interiors to hold small sewing notions, trinkets or correspondence.

Victorian papier-mache needlework caskets were decorative storage containers popular in 19th-century Britain, crafted from compressed paper layers and lacquered to hold sewing tools and embroidery supplies.

These pieces were constructed using layered paper pulp or sheets, treated with heat and linseed oil, then finished with black varnish, gilded artwork, and iridescent mother-of-pearl inlay.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-applied mother-of-pearl mosaic details, fine gilding with subtle surface craquelure, metal hinges, and a dense, sturdy structure despite being made from paper-based material.

Position the casket on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf as a central accent piece, or place it on a dressing table to hold modern trinkets and jewellery.

Keep the object away from direct heat and damp environments, clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid liquid polish or chemical solvents that could strip the lacquer finish.
