This seventeenth-century Jacobean wainscot armchair is constructed from solid dark brown oak with a rich aged patina. The upright backrest incorporates a fluted top rail above a central panel carved with an incised star motif and applied corner roundels, flanked by down-scrolling arms resting on baluster-turned supports. The solid timber seat sits above a plain frieze, supported on heavy turned front legs connected to rear uprights by low floor-level stretchers. Finials project slightly from the top corners of the back uprights, while wooden pegs secure the frame joints throughout, and subtle wear marks soften the edges of the arms and seat. The armchair measures 101.5 cm high, 63.5 cm wide, and 62.8 cm deep. Suitable for a gentleman's study or traditional library, this oak seat provides formal seating at a desk or alongside a fireplace.

A wainscot chair is a heavy wooden armchair made primarily of oak, originating in 16th and 17th century Britain. It features a joined timber frame with a solid, often carved or panelled backrest inspired by architectural wall panelling.

Chairs from this period were crafted using mortise and tenon joinery held together with wooden pegs rather than metal screws or modern adhesives. Solid oak planks formed the seat and back panel, supported by heavy turned legs and perimeter stretchers.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hewn oak timber, uneven peg construction, deep oxidation in unexposed areas, and period-appropriate decorative carving such as fluting, lunettes, or geometric star motifs.

Place the armchair as a singular statement seat in a hallway, library, or drawing room, balancing its heavy visual weight against neutral walls, contemporary art, or soft textiles.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
