Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, also known as a psyche mirror, is a freestanding full-length mirror supported by a dual-upright frame that allows the glass panel to tilt. Developed in the late eighteenth century, the design gained widespread popularity across Europe throughout the nineteenth century for use in dressing rooms.

Nineteenth-century Italian cheval mirrors were primarily crafted from carved softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, walnut, or poplar. The frames were frequently finished with gesso and hand-painted or gilt details, housing silvered glass mirror plates secured with cast brass or iron swivel fittings.

Authentic period examples display signs of genuine wear to the painted surface, such as paint loss near touchpoints, gesso exposure, and hand-carved construction details. Hardware such as pivot screws often exhibit historical hand-fitting, while mirror plates may show mild oxidisation or foxing behind original timber backing boards.

Position a painted cheval mirror angled in a dressing area, bedroom alcove, or wide hallway to bounce natural light around the room. Pairing the painted finish with neutral plaster walls, modern linen upholstery, or dark polished flooring creates a balanced contrast between historical texture and contemporary design.

Dust the painted timber frame using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could compromise delicate distemper or painted finishes. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly damp cloth, applying liquid glass cleaner sparingly directly to the cloth rather than the frame to prevent moisture entering behind the timber edges.
