This nineteenth century French country leaner and wall mirror stands in solid oak with an original glass plate displaying natural silvering and minor imperfections. The rectangular wooden frame has a grey-washed finish over worn paint, detailed with moulded borders and finely carved acanthus leaf motifs. Four brass side brackets attach to the frame for wall mounting. The structure remains solid, sturdy, woodworm-free, and complete with no missing elements. The piece measures 174 cm high, 105 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Such a mirror suits both antique and modern interiors, functioning well as a practical addition to an empty corner, hallway, or bedroom within an English country house or contemporary home.

FAQs

A leaner mirror is a tall frame designed to stand on the floor while resting against a wall, though many can also be wall-mounted. Full-length plate glass mirrors gained popularity during the nineteenth century as advancements in glass silvering techniques made large panels accessible for residential interiors.

Carved oak mirrors typically feature solid timber frames joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints, complemented by decorative relief carving along the outer moulding. The glass mirror plate is held securely within a rebate at the back using wooden backboards and metal fixing brackets.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved details with subtle irregularities, original wooden backboards, and natural oxidisation or foxing on the glass mirror plate. The timber frame typically exhibits uneven wear, historical shrinkage lines around joints, and aged patina in carved crevices.

A large oak mirror can be positioned as a focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living space to reflect light and expand spatial dimensions. Combining grey-washed or muted oak tones with neutral plaster walls and simple furnishings balances carved texture with modern architectural lines.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clear recessed areas. Clean the glass plate by applying cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the glass to prevent liquid from seeping behind the frame moulding.
