A remarkably well-preserved late Victorian mahogany cheval mirror, dating from circa 1890.
This elegant freestanding full-length mirror is a superb example of 19th-century bedroom furniture, blending classic proportions with authentic historic character.
The rectangular mirror frame is constructed from solid, rich mahogany with a moulded edge.
It is supported by two sturdy square-section upright pillars, each topped with delicate turned finials.
The frame retains its original brass adjusting keys (tightening knobs, one of them slighlty shortened but still perfectly working), allowing the bevelled mirror plate to tilt smoothly and secure perfectly at any angle.
The trestle-style base features an attractive, low-lying mahogany stretcher shelf.
The carved legs terminate on their original brass swivel castors, making the piece incredibly easy to move and reposition within a room.
Unlike many mirrors of this era, the original bevelled plate glass mirror is in wonderful
..., highly usable condition with excellent clarity, showing almost none of the clouding or heavy foxing typically found in antique mirrors.
The reverse side is fully enclosed by its original, solid two-piece timber protective backboard. In keeping with its age, the backboard shows two minor, natural shrinkage splits. These are purely cosmetic, stable, and typical of 19th-century solid wood panels acclimating to modern heating over time, leaving the structural integrity of the frame entirely unaffected.
This antique floor mirror is in excellent structural and aesthetic condition, presenting a beautiful, authentic finish that has not been over-restored. The mahogany frame is strong, joints are tight, and the tilting mechanism works perfectly. The original glass offers excellent usability and reflection. The original backboards are solid and secure, featuring two historic shrinkage splits which are entirely stable and do not affect the mirror''s stability. Minimal, authentic surface wear consistent with age.
