This Victorian stationery and writing box originates from around 1870 in the Victorian style. The dark brown rosewood construction includes contrasting satinwood marquetry depicting a central urn with foliate scrolls on the hinged lid and front panel, complemented by a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Additional details visible include boxwood inlay, a stepped base moulding, and the dark grain of the timber. Measuring 30.5 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 12.9 cm deep, the box fits neatly onto an office desk or library table. In a contemporary home, this piece serves as a decorative storage container for stationery, letters, and writing implements. The compact rectangular silhouette sits easily upon a study desk, writing table, or console surface, bringing period character to workspace storage. The dark rosewood tones and pale marquetry integrate naturally with traditional or eclectic interior schemes, offering both practical organization and decorative appeal for daily use.

A Victorian stationery box is a tabletop wooden container designed during the nineteenth century to store letter-writing materials, including paper, envelopes, inkwells, and pens.

Victorian craftsmen frequently utilised dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut for the primary casing, incorporating lighter woods like satinwood, boxwood, or mother-of-pearl for decorative marquetry and brass for escutcheons and hinges.

Authentic nineteenth-century marquetry exhibits natural variation in grain, slight hand-cut irregularities along inlay borders, natural patination around brassware, and construction signs such as hand-cut dovetail joints.

An antique writing box can be positioned as a decorative focal point on a modern office desk, sideboard top, or bookshelf, serving both as decorative accent woodwork and functional storage.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading, and clean the surface periodically using a high-grade beeswax polish applied with a soft microfibre cloth.
