Pair of Antique Edwardian Lacquered Walnut and Cane Armchairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful pair of antique Edwardian lacquered walnut and cane armchairs. They were made in England, they date from around the 1900-1910 period.

The quality is superb, they have a gorgeous design in the Queen Anne style. The solid walnut frames have caned backs with lacquered decorations at the top of the back rests. They have shepherds crook arms, and stand on cabriole legs with carving at the knees and feet.

We have had the frames re-polished and the seats have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for their age, with just some minor historical wear remaining here and there beneath the polish.

Width – 24 inches , 61 cm

Depth – 21 inches , 54 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the early 20th century, Edwardian cane armchairs frequently revived 18th-century design motifs, featuring lighter timber frames, turned or cabriole legs, and woven rattan back panels.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised walnut, mahogany, or rosewood for the main framework, paired with hand-woven split-cane backrests and upholstered fabric seating cushions.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-caning held with individual pegs on the reverse frame, natural age-related patination on the timber finish, and classic early 20th-century joinery techniques.

These armchairs serve as functional accent seating beside a console, in a home library, or placed at either end of a dining table to create visual contrast.

Timber surfaces should be preserved with periodic applications of natural beeswax, while the cane backrest benefits from occasional light misting with water on the underside to maintain flexibility.
