Pair of Antique William IV Mahogany Hall Chairs

19th century
Description

A lovely pair of antique William IV mahogany hall chairs. They were made in England, they date from the 1830-1840 period.

The quality is outstanding, they are beautifully constructed from solid mahogany with a gorgeous design and wonderful carving. They are a great size and very handy for use as hall chairs or side chairs around the home.

We have had them recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for their age. They have a gorgeous patina and colour tone, there are just some small marks and indentations here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed during the 1830s, William IV hall chairs typically feature solid wooden seats, carved backrests often incorporating shield or scroll motifs, and turned front legs paired with swept rear legs.

Flame mahogany, oak, and walnut were the primary timbers used, combined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery to create durable, unupholstered seating suitable for entryways.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative detailing, original construction joinery visible underneath the seat rail, distinct turned legs, and natural patination across the wood grain.

Antique hall chairs function effectively as accent seating in entrance halls, alongside console tables, or positioned in wide corridors to add structural and historic detail.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original finish.
