Set of Four George II Style Mahogany Dining Chairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality set of four George II style mahogany dining chairs, beautifully constructed with elegantly shaped backs and finely pierced vase form splats. The gently serpentine cresting rails are richly carved with stylised floral and shell decoration, giving the chairs a refined and decorative appearance.

Raised on well-proportioned cabriole front legs terminating in carved claw and ball feet, the knees are adorned with bold acanthus leaf carving, while the rear legs retain elegant swept supports. The chairs are fitted with generously proportioned drop-in upholstered seats in a striking golden velvet type fabric which contrasts particularly well against the rich mahogany frames.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George II style furniture, popular in the mid-18th century, is characterised by dark mahogany wood, cabriole front legs, and ornate carving. Key details frequently include pierced fretwork splats, yoke-shaped top rails, and claw-and-ball or pad feet.

Primary timbers included dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its rich grain and durability. Upholstery was traditionally executed using horsehair padding covered in velvet, wool tapestry, or silk damask over wooden seat frames.

Authentic period chairs feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle irregularities in hand-carved elements, and natural wood oxidisation on underside surfaces. Original seat rails will typically show hand-sawn tool marks and historic tack holes.

Balance dark mahogany woodwork by pairing the chairs with contemporary light neutral wall tones and modern glass or light oak dining tables. Re-upholstering the seat pads in textured modern fabrics can also bridge classical forms with contemporary schemes.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the finish. Position seating away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, joint loosening, and fabric fading.
