This Regency period English pier mirror dates from 1800 and is made from giltwood, gesso, and glass with an original gold finish. The substantial rectangular frame displays a stepped breakfront cornice above a frieze decorated with carved motifs, flanked by rosette medallions on the corner blocks. Fluted side columns run down the length of the glass plate, adorned with carved acanthus leaves and decorative turnings at regular intervals along the shafts. The original mirror plate shows visible signs of age including dark patination and spots across the surface, matching the original gilt and gesso application. The entire piece measures 110 cm high, 86 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large mirror functions well when hung securely above a mantelpiece in a living room, drawing room, or dining room. The grand architectural proportions and classical Regency motifs complement traditional or transitional interior schemes, reflecting light and adding depth to reception spaces. The sturdy construction sits flush against a wall surface, making it practical for placement over a traditional fireplace opening or within a formal hallway setting.

A pier mirror was originally designed to hang on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier, in 18th and 19th-century homes. Its primary architectural purpose was to reflect incoming daylight back into the room and create an impression of symmetry and space.

Frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso plaster. Intricate decorative details were added using molded composition, after which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over a clay bole base using water gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut wooden backboards with visible age, mercury-silvered glass displaying gentle speckling or foxing, and natural wear where the underlying clay bole or wood shows through thin areas of the gilding.

Place the mirror above a console table in an entryway, mount it over a living room fireplace, or position it at the end of a corridor. The classical structure provides visual height while balancing modern, minimalist, or traditional furnishings.

Avoid using water or liquid chemicals directly on gilded surfaces, as moisture dissolves the gesso underlayer. Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, and clean glass sparingly with a dampened cloth.
