This pair of nineteenth-century Continental side chairs belongs to the Louis XVI style and is fashioned from wood with a warm gold giltwood finish and light beige upholstery on the seats. Each chair presents a carved frame with neoclassical cresting, an open carved splat, and turned fluted legs. The woodwork shows visible grain and subtle wear across the surfaces alongside detailed floral or leaf motifs at the top of the uprights. The chairs measure 94 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, with a seat height of 46 cm. These pieces suit dining spaces, sitting rooms, or hallways as functional seating or decorative accents in a French chateau interior scheme.

These chairs originate from mainland Europe during the 19th century, drawing heavy influence from classical French designs such as Louis XVI and Neoclassical styles. They feature intricate hand-carved wooden frames finished with gold leaf, typically paired with neutral fabric upholstery.

Craftsmen constructed the frames using hardwood, such as beech or walnut, which was coated with gesso, carved, and layered with thin gold leaf. Traditional joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon joints, provided structural integrity beneath the decorative gilding.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural wear to the gilded layer, often revealing reddish or grey bole or white gesso beneath. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-carved tool marks, peg construction, and age-consistent oxidisation of the timber.

Pairing formal gilded chairs with modern, minimalist desks or placing them as accent seating in a hallway creates visual contrast. Re-upholstering the seats in crisp linen or textured fabric bridges the gap between historical craft and contemporary aesthetic sensibilities.

Dust gilt surfaces gently using a soft, dry feather duster or soft brush, avoiding water or chemical sprays which dissolve gesso and damage leafing. Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement and cracking along frame joinery.
