French ormolu jewellery caskets gained immense popularity during the 19th century, particularly within the Victorian and Belle Epoque eras, as luxurious accessories for holding precious trinkets on dressing tables.

These caskets are typically constructed using cast or stamped gilt bronze or brass, known as ormolu, combined with thick bevelled glass panels and lined internally with silk velvet or satin.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut bevelled glass with natural imperfections, heavy cast metal mounts with period-appropriate patination, and traditional joinery rather than modern adhesives.

Placed upon a dressing table, mantlepiece, or console, these caskets add reflective metallic texture and classical elegance when used to display small contemporary accessories or left empty as sculptural objects.

To preserve the gilt finish and fabric lining, avoid using harsh chemical polishes on the metalwork and keep the item away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
