Pair of English Art Deco Solid Mahogany Dining Chairs, C.1935

1920 - 1940
Description

Pair of English Art Deco Solid Mahogany Dining Chairs

A refined pair of English Art Deco dining chairs, dating to the 1930s, constructed in solid mahogany, most likely African sapele. The chairs are of particularly restrained and well-balanced form, with low backs framed by gently rounded corners and two horizontal slats with rounded terminals echoing the shape of the top rail, reflecting the softer, more architectural direction of the later Art Deco period.

The frames are well drawn, with a gentle rake to the rear legs and fine square tapering front legs, giving the chairs a light and elegant stance. The seats are traditionally upholstered with sprung bases and retain their original velvet fabric, shaped with a subtly scooped front rail for both comfort and visual softness. The overall effect is one of quiet quality and considered design, sitting comfortably within both period and more contemporary interiors.

By family repute, the chairs were acquired new in the 1930s and have remained in the same family since, contributing to their well-preserved and original condition. Examples of this quality, retaining their original upholstery and surface, are becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Dimensions:

Height: 79 cm (31 1/8")

Width: 46.5 cm (18 1/4")

Depth: 50.5 cm (19 7/8")

Seat Height: 48 cm (18 7/8")

Condition:

Very good, original condition. The frames are solid and stable, with a pleasing, undisturbed surface showing only light, age-appropriate wear. The original sprung seats and velvet upholstery show minor, even wear consistent with careful domestic use. A well-preserved and honest pair.
