Pair of American Square Back Side Chairs C1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A pair of early 20th century American ‘square back’ Windsor side chairs in poplar and birch with interesting association and stamped plate inscription attributing ownership to ‘The Liberty National Bank & Trust Company’, probably relating to the period after 1920 when the ‘New York Trust Company’ merged with ‘Liberty National Bank of New York’. Further indented stamps beneath the seat suggest an association with ‘6th Avenue’ (aka ‘The Avenue of Americas’) in the commercial quarter of Manhattan. This particular ‘square back’ design with double horizontal top rail first appeared in the American Windsor chair making tradition in the early 1800s.

Declaration

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated these American Square Back Chairs to the 1920s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early 20th-century American square back chairs combine traditional Windsor spindle construction with a flattened crest rail, reflecting a resurgence of Colonial Revival furniture design during the 1920s.

These chairs were constructed using native North American hardwoods such as maple, pine, or birch, featuring turned legs, wedge-tenoned vertical spindles, and contoured timber seats.

Authentic period chairs exhibit turned stretchers, subtle hand-finishing marks on the underside of the seat, honest wear to lower stretchers, and traditional joinery without modern fasteners.

Position a pair of these lightweight timber chairs alongside a minimalist wooden table or use them individually as occasional seating in a hallway or bedroom space.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the timber clear of direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
