An exceptional full period 18th Century Chippendale Rococo Mirror. Beautifully carved with flowing C Scrolls, flowers and foliage. It's worth noting the very fine and detailed nature of the carving and the exquisite design of this elegant piece with three lightly foxed and sparkling Mercury Mirror plates still in place. The piece is in remarkably good condition with little sign of repair of the years.

A fine and rare piece of English Country house furniture.

An overmantel mirror is a horizontally proportioned wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace hearth, gaining widespread popularity during the 18th century as glassmaking techniques developed to allow for larger multi-plate installations.

Frames were carved from timber such as pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso, and hand-gilded with thin gold leaf applied over clay bole, housing mercury-amalgam glass plates.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved rear timber structures, mercury glass exhibiting dark oxidisation spotting, wooden peg joinery, and visible age shrinkage or cracking in the gesso background.
