FAQs

Regency overmantel mirrors are defined by classical architectural symmetry, fluted columns, and decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves or palmettes. Produced in the early nineteenth century, these mirrors feature horizontal proportions designed specifically to sit directly above a drawing room mantelpiece.

These mirrors were constructed from carved pine or lime wood substrates, often finished with gesso and hand-applied gold leaf gilding. Many designs incorporated ebonised inner slips and mirror plates made of silvered or mercury-backed glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural wear or rubbing to the gilding showing red bole underneath, and light foxing or oxidation spots on the original mirror glass.

A Regency overmantel mirror can be mounted above a fireplace, console table, or hallway sideboard to create visual balance. Its gilded surface reflects natural light, adding depth to both period properties and modern spaces.

Maintain giltwood frames by lightly dusting with a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent dust accumulation in carved details. Avoid using water, liquid cleaners, or chemical solvents, as these dissolve gilding layers and damage the gesso base.
