FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large decorative mirror specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace. Originating in the 17th century and gaining immense popularity during the Georgian and Victorian eras, these mirrors were constructed to reflect candlelight and natural light around dimly lit period rooms while serving as a grand focal point.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors were typically constructed using a wooden substrate, such as pine or hardwood, which was then layered with gessoa mixture of plaster of Paris and glue. Details and motifs were hand-carved or molded in relief using composition ornament, followed by the application of thin sheets of gold leaf adhered to a bole base.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut plate glass with subtle imperfections, oxidation, and foxing visible on the silvered reverse. The wooden backboards should show age-appropriate shrinkage and tool marks, while the gesso and gold leaf layer will exhibit craquelure, micro-chipping, and wear consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

A large antique gilt mirror can anchor a modern interior by introducing historical contrast and reflecting light to expand spatial proportions. It can be mounted directly above a fireplace mantel or rested casually on the floor against a neutral wall to balance minimalist furnishings with classic texture and patina.

Antique gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and sensitive to moisture, alcohol, and harsh chemicals. Dusting should be done gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfiber cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners or abrasive rubbing that could strip away the delicate gold leaf layer.
