This oval wall mirror dates from the 1920 period and follows a Chinoiserie style with an English Country House design vibe. The piece has a black lacquered wood frame finished with a wax polish, and incorporates mirror glass. The decoration comprises intricate gold Chinoiserie landscapes, pagoda vignettes, a lattice diaper pattern, and gilded figures depicting people in traditional costumes, flowers, and birds. The frame exhibits a dark black timber body with contrasting metallic gold motifs applied along the border. Measuring 51 cm high, 82.5 cm wide, and 1.5 cm deep, the mirror has a shallow profile suited to domestic wall mounting. In a home today, this mirror is typically used above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway to add decorative detail and reflect light. The wall hanging mounts flat against a vertical surface, providing a focal point that coordinates with traditional or eclectic interior schemes. The classic black and gold palette integrates easily with various wood tones and wall colours.

FAQs

Chinoiserie emerged in Europe during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as decorative arts drew inspiration from East Asian aesthetics, motifs, and lacquering techniques. Artisans integrated depictions of pagodas, stylized flora, figures, and landscapes into traditional Western furniture forms, creating a popular fusion style that endured through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Traditional European japanning relied on timber frames coated with built-up layers of shellac-based varnishes to imitate authentic Asian lacquer. The decorative vignettes were then painted or raised using gilded powders, gold leaf, and pigments to produce contrasting, detailed scenes on a dark background.

Authentic pieces generally display subtle surface craquelure, natural wear to the gilded decoration, and evidence of hand-painted brushwork rather than modern printed transfers. The reverse of the frame often reveals age-appropriate wood construction, hand-carved joinery, and oxidized mirror backing.

A black Chinoiserie mirror serves as a focal accent when positioned above a hallway console table, a dining room sideboard, or a chimneypiece. Its dark frame and gilded highlights complement both traditional period interiors and minimalist contemporary spaces seeking visual contrast.

Clean lacquered surfaces using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust without scratching the varnish. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can compromise the gilding and cause the original shellac layers to bloom or lift.
