This walnut open armchair dates from the nineteenth century in the Georgian style. The wooden frame displays a warm brown tone with carved cabriole front legs and shaped open arms, complemented by brass studding along the lower edge of the seat. The upholstery is a geometric patterned textile featuring terracotta, brown, and cream diamond motifs across both the backrest and the seat. Traditional reupholstering methods maintain the period aesthetic of the piece. The armchair measures 102 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 58 cm deep. Suitable for placement in a traditional living room, study, or hallway, this chair provides an authentic seating option for period interiors.

An open armchair, historically referred to as an elbow chair or fauteuil, features exposed wooden arms that are not filled in with upholstery between the seat and the armrest. Popularised during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this design creates a lighter visual silhouette while offering structured seating support.

Traditional walnut armchairs feature frames carved from solid walnut, joined using mortise and tenon woodwork techniques. Seats and backrests were traditionally built with wooden webbing, horsehair or wool padding, covered in woven wool tapestry, velvet, or kilim textiles, and secured around the perimeter with brass studs.

Authentic period walnut seating displays hand-carved details, irregular jointing, and subtle variations in surface wear. Look for natural oxidation in the timber grain, historic hand-turned screw threads, original brass tack marks on the frame, and a deep, aged patina that cannot be replicated by modern artificial distressing.

A patterned walnut armchair serves as a focal piece alongside contemporary neutral sofas, balancing modern minimalist lines with rich textural detail. Placing the chair beside a floor lamp creates an inviting reading corner, while pairing it with natural wood or stone side tables highlights its historic craftsmanship.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying beeswax annually along the grain. Keep the textile upholstery dust-free using a soft brush attachment on a low-suction vacuum, and position the armchair away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent wood shrinkage and fabric fading.
