This 18th-century Irish open armchair dates to circa 1780 and belongs to the Georgian style. The frame is constructed from warm brown walnut with a polished finish, complemented by a drop-in seat upholstered in a burgundy patterned fabric. Distinctive visual details include a carved pierced splat with an open heart motif, outswept curved armrests, squared front legs, and a sturdy H-stretcher base. Minor historic signs of long-dead woodworm and old repairs appear across the timber structure, while the seat benefits from re-webbing and re-covering. The chair measures 100 cm in height, 71 cm in width, and 51 cm in depth, with a seat height of 46 cm. Practical applications for this piece include seating at a desk in a home office or serving as a decorative and functional armchair in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The substantial width and supportive armrests provide comfortable seating capacity for daily use while maintaining traditional period character.

Late 18th-century Irish seating furniture frequently incorporates elements of George III and Chippendale design, featuring distinctively carved splats, shaped arm supports, and sturdy timber frames engineered for country houses.

These chairs were crafted from solid timbers such as walnut or mahogany using mortise and tenon joinery, hand-pierced back splats, and drop-in upholstered seats supported by perimeter stretchers.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-planing on unseen surfaces, original wooden peg joinery, natural patination in high-wear areas, and slight asymmetry from hand construction techniques.

Position the armchair as an accent piece beside a modern side table, integrate it into a library reading corner, or pair it with neutral upholstery to accentuate its carved wood silhouette.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year, keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and high humidity.
