Description

A very good and sturdy set of ash and elm Windsor chairs with a well developed rich nutty colour and good patination and all in excellent robust and original condition.

Two carvers and three standards, all with Prince of Wales feathers to the splats and each splat pierced and carved with three delicate roundels.

Comfortable with deep and wide seats and a gentle rake to the backs. Plenty of width between the arms of the carvers.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular furniture-making traditions where spindles and legs were driven directly into a thick wooden seat.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically feature a combination of native timbers, utilising elm or fruitwood for the sculpted seats, ash or beech for the bentwood bows and spindles, and oak or pine for the undercarriages.

Authenticity is identified through construction details such as hand-carved saddle seats, wedge-tenon joints, tool marks from drawknives, and appropriate timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with the 19th century.

These chairs provide a tactile contrast around modern minimalist dining tables or serve as standalone accent pieces in eclectic, rustic, or transitional rooms to add historical depth.

Preserve the finish by maintaining stable room humidity away from direct heat sources and applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood without sealing it.
