Giltwood mirrors became prominent during the 17th and 18th centuries, evolving through baroque, rococo, and neoclassical periods where gold leaf was meticulously applied to carved wood to project opulence and reflect candlelight.

Traditional construction involves hand-carving frames from softwoods like pine or hardwoods like gesso-coated gitch, followed by the application of thin gold leaf sheets using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as shrinkage cracks in the gesso, foxing and oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plates, and hand-tooled carving details rather than modern resin moulds.

Pairing ornate gold frames with minimalist or modern backdrops creates a striking visual contrast, often hanging them symmetrically in hallways, above mantelpieces, or as focal points on plain painted walls.

Preservation requires avoiding harsh chemical cleaners and excessive moisture, using only a soft, dry feather duster to gently remove dust, and keeping them away from direct sunlight and humidity.
