This Victorian armchair dates from 1860 in the Victorian style, constructed with a warm brown walnut timber frame and covered in patterned floral fabric incorporating pastel pinks, greens, and creams. The piece stands on small brass castor feet and features deeply carved cresting at the top of the curved backrest, turned side pillars flanking the back, and padded armrests supported by scrolling wooden arms. The exposed timber shows a polished finish, and the joints remain solid throughout the structure. The upholstery is patterned with intricate floral and abstract motifs across both the rounded seat and the upright back panel. Measuring 95 cm in height, this armchair provides comfortable seating for a living room, study, or bedroom setting. Suitable for daily use in a traditional or eclectic home, the chair works well positioned beside a fireplace, reading nook, or desk. The sturdy frame supports upright seating, while the padded armrests offer additional comfort. Regular placement in a dry indoor environment helps preserve the walnut frame and fabric condition over time.

FAQs

Victorian seating is characterised by robust wooden framing, expressive relief carving, and padded upholstery designed for comfort. Popular between 1837 and 1901, these designs often incorporate elaborate crestings, turned spindles, and dark hardwood construction.

Victorian armchairs typically utilised solid hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood for the framing. The upholstery originally consisted of horsehair padding, steel coil springs, and fabrics such as damask, velvet, or woven tapestry.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved decorative motifs, hand-mortised frame joinery, and natural age-related patination on the timber. Look for original brass or ceramic castors attached to the front legs and evidence of traditional coil spring construction underneath.

Position the armchair as an accent piece alongside contemporary minimalist furniture to create visual contrast. Pairing the detailed woodwork with plain backdrop walls or neutral floorings allows the carved frame and pattern to serve as a focal point.

Dust the timber regularly using a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish annually to preserve the wood finish. Keep upholstered areas clean with low-suction vacuuming and position the chair away from direct sunlight and radiator heat sources.
