Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Pietra Dura box is a decorative storage casket featuring inlay artwork made from cut and polished hardstones, marbles, and semi-precious minerals. Originating in Renaissance Florence, this lapidary technique became widely produced on small wooden boxes as souvenir items during the 19th-century Grand Tour.

These boxes typically consist of an ebonised fruitwood, walnut, or mahogany body fitted with a stone inlay panel on the lid. The inlaid motifs are composed of sliced stones such as lapis lazuli, jasper, agate, and coloured marbles, often finished with brass escutcheons or key fittings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display micro-gaps between stone seams cut by hand scroll saws, natural mineral inclusions, and light surface wear consistent with age. Look for traditional ebonising patina on the timber casing rather than modern black paint, along with period-appropriate lock mechanisms.

Place the box as a focal decorative object on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or desk. It pairs effectively alongside leather-bound volumes, brass accessories, and muted botanical prints within classic or eclectic design schemes.

Dust the item gently using a dry, soft microfiber cloth to prevent scratching the polished hardstones or ebonised surface finish. Keep the object away from direct sunlight, open heat sources, and high humidity to prevent the timber chassis from warping or splitting.
