Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the early nineteenth century during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, French Empire pier mirrors are tall, rectangular mirrors designed to be positioned on the wall space, or pier, between windows. Characterised by Neoclassical symmetry, architectural cornices, and refined gilt detailing, these pieces reflect natural light and enhance room proportions.

Traditional French Empire pier mirrors were constructed using solid timber frameworks, often pine or oak, coated with gesso and layered with paint or genuine gold leaf gilding. The reflective panels comprised hand-blown mercury glass, which exhibits characteristic soft tonal variations and subtle foxing over time.

Authentic nineteenth-century French Empire mirrors feature hand-carved timber moulding, original mercury glass with natural dark spot oxidisation, and hand-applied water gilding over red or yellow clay bole. Structural indicators include hand-planed timber backboards and iron hanging rings consistent with period manufacturing techniques.

A pair of Empire pier mirrors can be styled symmetrically flanking a doorway, positioned above matching console tables, or mounted on opposite sides of a room. Their vertical proportions add visual height and classical structure to modern dining rooms, entrance halls, or drawing rooms.

Maintain gilded wood frames by removing dust gently with a soft feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and leafing. Glass panels should be cleaned carefully using a damp cloth squeezed almost dry, taking care not to allow moisture to seep behind the frame border.
