Trollope & Sons Club Style Armchair

19th century
Description

Trollope & Sons Club Style Armchair

Trollope & Sons founded in 1778, were one of the largest prestige furniture makers during the 19th century, and participated at the Great Exhibitions in London & Paris.

In the shape and spec' of a Howard and Sons Club Chair.

C.1860

Width 85cm x Depth 115cm x Height 76cm, with a seat height of 45cm and a seat depth of 70cm.

Now sympathetically restored to its undergarments, most of which is original traditional upholstery of an unusually high standard with ivory coloured horse hair, fine linen hessian and what I believe is fustian a high quality fabric with unusually deep and fur like pile.

In my opinion this is the highest quality original traditional upholstery I have seen or known of.

We have another Trollope & Sons armchair available, please see the last image.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Club style armchairs emerged in nineteenth-century England, predominantly designed for high-end gentlemens clubs and stately residences. They are defined by deep seating, padded armrests, and heavy upholstery tailored for prolonged comfort.

Authentic armchairs from this period typically feature solid hardwood frames, hand-tied steel coil springs, natural hair stuffing, heavy canvas webbing, and turned timber legs fitted with brass castors.

Look for maker stamps or brass plaque labels on the rear frame or back leg, stamped brass castors, hand-stitched upholstery rails, original coil springing, and natural timber wear consistent with age.

A traditional club armchair can be reupholstered in textured wool, velvet, or neutral linen to bridge historical architecture with contemporary minimalist, eclectic, or layered interior aesthetics.

Vacuum upholstery regularly using a soft brush attachment, keep the timber legs clear of excess moisture, polish metal castors with a dry cloth, and position the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric degradation.
