Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Georgian barrelback armchair exemplifies classic English Country House style. The piece pairs a restored wooden frame with traditional cream linen calico upholstery, featuring vertical channel fluting across the curved barrel back and padded armrests. Dark polished timber legs taper downwards, terminating in original brass castors. Visible wear includes raw, unhemmed fabric edges and minor fraying around the seams, indicating the traditional upholstery remains ready for a complete recover. Measuring width 73 cm by depth 65 cm by height 106 cm, with a seat width of 46 cm, seat depth of 50 cm, and seat height of 38 cm, the armchair offers substantial proportions for daily seating. Placed in a study, drawing room, or reading nook, the chair brings authentic historic character to interior spaces while providing an opportunity for bespoke customisation through new fabric selection.

FAQs

A Georgian barrelback armchair features a tall curved backrest resembling the interior of a barrel, designed during the 18th century to retain heat from fireplaces while shielding the sitter from draughts.

Traditional construction employed solid hardwood frames, typically oak or mahogany, stuffed with horsehair or wool upholstery and supported on tapered legs with brass castors.

Authentic Georgian examples feature hand-carved hardwood frames, pegged joinery, original brass castors, and period-appropriate proportions with hand-stitched internal padding.

Position the chair in a reading corner or beside a fireplace, juxtaposing its structured silhouette against contemporary neutral textiles or minimalist side tables.

Vacuum upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment, keep wood legs conditioned with natural beeswax, and place the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
