A really lovely 19th century English painted and parcel gilt overmantle mirror/ pier mirror.

It has its original bevelled glass and wood back.

This mirror is in very good condition with lovely gilding and with fine detail. The original bevelled glass is also in good condition with some nice foxing and ageing to it.

FAQs

Victorian overmantel and pier mirrors became popular during the nineteenth century as interior lighting relied heavily on candlelight and gaslight. Designed specifically to sit above fireplace mantels or between tall windows, these mirrors reflected light to brighten drawing rooms and formal reception spaces.

These mirrors were typically constructed from softwood or hardwood frames coated in gesso moulding. Highlights were detailed with gold leaf through water or oil gilding, while surrounding areas were painted or polished, surrounding a silvered plate glass panel.

Authentic period mirrors feature backboards made of hand-sawn timber panels, natural foxing or oxidisation on the mirror glass, and genuine wear to the gilding where the underlying clay bole shows through.

A Victorian pier mirror can be mounted above a modern chimneypiece or positioned in a hallway above a console table. The contrast between muted paintwork, gold leafing, and clean contemporary lines creates architectural interest without overwhelming the space.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid water, damp sponges, or chemical glass cleaners on the painted and gilt surface, as moisture can dissolve gesso and remove delicate gold leaf.
