A Classic Late Period Brady 40 Drawer Collectors Cabinet Circa1910/1920

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Atropos Antiques
Description

THIS CLASSIC FORTY DRAWER BUTTERFLY COLLECTORS CABINET BY THE FAMOUS CABINET MAKER, BRADY, IS ONE OF THE LAST PRODUCTS BY THIS MAKER. BRADY IS RENOWNED AND RECOGNISED BY ENTOMOLOGISTS AS POSSIBLY THE MOST SUPERIOR CABINET MAKER OF HIS TIME. THIS STYLE TYPIFIES THE EDWARDIAN ERA WHICH WAS POSSIBLY THE ZENITH OF COLLECTING IN THIS FIELD. THE CABINET HAS ALL THE 'BRADY' FEATURES BUT HAS A RAISED TOP AND CONCAVE CORNICE WHICH WAS FASHIONABLE IN THE PERIOD. THE CLASSIC BUN FEET AND DOVE TAIL NAPHTHA CELL TO ALL DRAWERS IS A TRADEMARK RECOGNISABLE IN BRADY CABINETS.

I HAVE CHECKED THE DRAWER DEPTH AND DESPITE AN OVERALL DEPTH OF TWO INCHES IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACCOMMODATE A 38mm PIN. THERE IS JUST ENOUGH CLEARANCE. THIS IS OFTEN A NECESSITY FOR COLLECTORS USING THE LONGER 'CONTINENTAL DEPTH' PINS.

CABINET DIMENSIONS.

HEIGHT. 48.5 INCHES.

WIDTH. 38.75 INCHES.

FRONT TO BACK. 19.25 INCHES.

DRAWERS.

WIDTH. 17 INCHES.

FRONT TO BACK. 16 INCHES.

OVERALL DEPTH. 2 INCHES WITH AN INTERNAL CAPABILITY FOR A 38mm PIN.

THE DRAWERS ARE CORK LINED AND PAPERED BUT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT A BUYER WOULD WISH TO HAVE THE DRAWERS RE-LINED. WE CARRY OUT THIS PROCEDURE AND ARE HAPPY TO QUOTE FOR THIS IF REQUIRED.

DELIVERY CAN BE ARRANGED.

ALL QUESTIONS WELCOME AND WILL BE ANSWERED PROMPTLY AND ACCURATELY.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A collectors cabinet, widely produced during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is a specialised storage piece fitted with multiple shallow drawers designed to store and display specimens, coins, medals, or archival material securely.

These cabinets were typically constructed from high-grade hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring dovetail drawer joinery, brass hinges and locks, and glass-topped drawers to protect sensitive contents from dust.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques, including hand-fitted shallow drawers, original brass lock mechanisms, smooth timber patina, and precise joinery crafted to house scientific or personal collections.

A collectors cabinet acts as a functional focal point in a study, home office, or hallway, offering organised storage for artwork, jewellery, documents, or small objects while providing a sturdy upper display surface.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a light coat of beeswax polish annually, while avoiding direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage or fading.
